El Pan de Cada Día (Our Daily Bread): Cuban Educators' Views on Fostering Civic Responsibility

Abstract

Cuba’s formal educational system requires that teachers instill attitudes and habits of civic responsibility in young people. Part of a larger, society-wide approach to citizenship education, all people are expected to demonstrate civic care for one another. Current changes in Cuba’s economic landscape have interfered with these civic norms, leading citizens to place personal needs above those of others and of society. A group of social studies teachers have nevertheless remained firm in their efforts to foster civic ideals. Highlighting affectivity, solidarity and respect for individual difference, these teachers describe how they inculcate civic responsibility in their classrooms and maintain their commitment to preparing young people for participation in Cuban society.
