Teacher Enactment of Human Relationships With Nature in Early Secondary School Science

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Illinois

Abstract

An Institutional Ethnographic (IE) study was conducted with ten grade 10 science teachers to examine how they come to understand ways nature-human relationships are enacted in their teaching practice. Evidence pointed to the existence of a trans-local science teacher culture that has many patterns and similarities from teacher to teacher and school to school. Teachers frequently identified “what works” as the primary criteria for choosing certain lessons to be included in this culture. Lesson that “worked” typically engaged students in controlling and manipulating materials, the local environment, or their environment in general, or learning about how humans use such practices for the betterment of our life and society.
