The Impact of Goal Orientation on Learning and Engagement in a Problem-Based Learning Unit

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The current study investigated the relation between goal orientation and educational outcomes within a problem-based learning (PBL) environment. Participants took self-report measures for course-level goal orientation, project-level goal orientation, transformative experience and project interest. They also completed a learning assessment measuring recognition learning and transfer for material covered in the PBL unit. Course-level and project-level goal orientations were used in multiple regression equations along with GPA to predict learning (recognition learning and transfer) and engagement (transformative experience and project interest). The results of this study suggest mastery goals are beneficial to engagement and at the course-level may predict transfer in a PBL setting. These findings expand on prior findings about the impact of goal orientation on learning and engagement.
