Considering the Universal Design for Learning as a Tool for Developing Curricula for Educational Change

Abstract

The paper discusses the potential of employing the principles of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to develop curricula for educational change through inclusive education. Using content analysis, it focuses on the way the goals, methods, materials, and assessment are presented in the New National Curriculum (NNC) developed in Cyprus. The findings suggest that the curriculum does not take into consideration the principles of the UDL, and it fails to convey the meaning that education is addressed to a diverse population of learners. The discussion focuses on the role of the curriculum in promoting inclusive education in countries that expressed commitment to do so (e.g. by signing and ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities).
