Problem-Based Learning Processes: Impact on Preservice Teachers' Motivational Orientations

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Lobby Level, Columbus AB

Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an inquiring approach to learning that requires the learners to be engaged with a real-world problem before they are presented with content information. The use of real-world scenarios in PBL also enhances learners’ motivation for self-directed and collaborative learning. This study investigated the predictive relations of PBL processes of problem posing, scaffolding and connecting on preservice teachers’ motivational orientations. Findings demonstrate the importance of preservice teachers’ prior motivational orientations in determining how much they will benefit from the key PBL processes. The understanding of preservice teachers’ prior motivational orientations will inform teacher educators on the specific approaches to enhance preservice teachers’ motivation in PBL.
