Attitudes and Strategies: High School Teachers' Perceived Role With Mental Health Concerns in the Classroom

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This presentation will share the results of a survey of high school teachers’ perceptions of and strategies used for students with mental health concerns. Teachers were able to identify characteristics of depression or ADHD and differentiate from daily troubles in case studies. While teachers generally agreed school personnel could support students with depression, those with a personal history of mental health concerns were more likely to agree that general education teachers had a role. The most frequently used strategies to support students with depression related to informal social supports. Although it is not expected that classroom teachers replace the role of mental health professionals, providing additional training to supplement already occurring conversations in conjunction with other services is warranted.
