The Reflective Researcher: The Role of Writing and Self-Reflection in the Undergraduate Research Experience

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Undergraduate research, as a high-impact practice, is not only about developing research skills but about critical thinking and developing an identity as a researcher and scholar. This paper will explore how writing, self-reflection, and the ability to apply lessons learned through reflection (reflective application) during a research experience influence student development. Preliminary findings suggest that students who are able to participate in research, reflect on that experience, and apply that reflection perceive greater gains professionally, socially, and academically. The full research paper will also explore how changing the modality of reflection or the amount of written reflection impacts students’ experiences in research.
