Implementing Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in the Classrooms

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Two CCSS for mathematics implementation issues were examined: teacher coverage and the coverage in available textbooks. Textbook series were compared to K-8 teachers recorded daily coverage of the standards as well as expert ratings of instructional time should be devoted to the standards according to their complexities and relative importance for that grade's instructional content. Results indicated that the textbooks in use generally did not cover all of the on grade CCSSM standards. On average, 70% of the CCSSM standards were covered at each grade. In terms of content coverage, only an average of 43% of the book covered the on grade standards. Time spent by teachers was more aligned with the textbook suggested coverage than with the experts.
