Representation in Research: The Impact of Race and Class on Participation in Undergraduate Research

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

This research addresses broad access issues in undergraduate research along with exploring what factors impact the quality of these experiences. Findings demonstrate that continuing patterns of unequal participation in research for underrepresented minority and first-generation students persist. Additionally, transfer students, working students, and students who care for dependents are less likely to engage in research. This research also examines what factors impact the quality of research experience and what students gain from participating. Findings suggest that once barriers are addressed, such as paid research opportunities and providing support to match students with research opportunities and mentors, the relationship with a research mentorship and the length of time spent in research impact the quality of research experience.
