Reflections on Articulating and Developing Conceptions of Social Justice From African American Preservice Teachers

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This research will explore the perceptions held by African American pre-service teachers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) pertaining to the concepts of social justice and their roles in promoting views grounded in social justice. Further, this study will investigate pre-service teachers plan to enact social justice through literacy based instruction with children from historically marginalized cultural and racial memberships. This understanding may help to identify methods of strengthening the instruction around social justice pedagogies for pre-service teachers while also unveiling understandings about African American pre-service teachers’ experiences and perspectives about both articulating and enacting social justice pedagogies.
