The purpose of our study was to explore the validity of an existing commercial teacher selection instrument, the Haberman Star Teacher Interview, as a predictor for success in an urban teacher education program. We gathered data from 109 incoming students in five cohorts from 2005 to 2010. We found good evidence of interrater agreement, and principal components analysis provided evidence of seven dimensions for the items, in line with the intent of its developers. We obtained evidence of predictive validity though logistic regression models using the instrument scores to predict whether students would leave the program before graduation. Overall, we found support for the use of the instrument as a multidimensional measure of probable success in the program.
