Teachers work within a context of competing stories, including pressures regarding English language learners (ELs), a deficit view of teachers, and high-stakes testing, all of which impact teachers’ emotions. Within this context, teachers have priorities. By laying her stories alongside those of two other teachers of ELs, the first author, working with critical friends, determines that teachers priorities are: relationships with students and helping students continue to progress. This study provides a glimpse into the priorities of teachers of ELs who work for student success while connecting to a broader context of mandated change.
