An Online Learning Technology to Scaffold Recall of Relevant Visual and Semantic Information in an Undergraduate Science Course

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Armitage

Abstract

This study examined the effects of web-based retrieval practice on the recall of visual and semantic information. Web server logs and performance on weekly class quizzes served as data sources. A mixed effects ordinal logistic regression demonstrated that in addition to the expected influence of quiz complexity, variables associated with overt and covert retrieval were found to be significant predictors of students’ plant identification performance. The main implication for practice is that web-based retrieval exercises provide learning benefits in science education and both covert and overt retrieval play an important role as predictors of performance on a recall task.
