Case-Based Instruction in Engineering: A Student Perspective on Implementation

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

A major innovation in the STEM undergraduate classroom in the last 15 years is the use of case studies that use realistic or true narratives—that is, stories, to educate (Herreid, 2007). However, we know little about how undergraduate engineering students perceive case-based learning. This research study examined what are students’ impressions of implementing case studies in an undergraduate mechanical engineering course. The findings from this study show that there are many useful educational benefits of case-based instruction. Results also exhibited difficulties students encounter when learning from a new pedagogical approach. We offer implications for incorporating case studies into engineering courses and directions for future research.
