Preservice Teachers' Development of Multicultural and Global Awareness: An Investigation Into Student Teaching Abroad

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

There is a need for teachers and teacher educators to provide students with opportunities to develop cultural and global competencies. To this end, investigating the most effective methods for developing these skills is also important. The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to investigate these competencies gained from international internship programs in Department of Defense Education and Activities schools in England and an International/American school in Costa Rica. Findings illustrate students’ development of cultural and global competencies, inclusion of culturally relevant pedagogy and curriculum, and understanding of working with English Language Learners. This study is relevant to the enhancement of teaching, development of courses and curricula, and understanding the cultural and global growth of student teachers in an international internship.
