This case study examines the personal and educational backgrounds and program experiences of three social studies teacher candidates of color, particularly how they negotiated the teacher preparation landscape in a traditional, predominately white university teacher education program. Using grounded theory as a lens, the author used multiple interviews and field notes to examine their experiences. Findings suggest their visions for social studies did not align with their teacher preparation program, yet their persistence to enact their vision was steadfast. The findings have potential implications for social studies teacher preparation programs as recruitment and retention of teacher candidates of color increase.
