Abstract

This longitudinal, mixed-methods study, funded by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program, captures a sample of students who identified in their eighth-grade electronic Personal Education Planners (ePEP) an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and information communications technology (ICT). Using the Florida Department of Education’s Data Warehouse, this study connects these students’ experiences in rigorous coursetaking with their participation and persistence in STEM/ICT career academies and uses the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center of Education and Statistics High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) to examine how Florida’s students compare to national trends. Results indicate that students in the Florida and HSLS:09 data set are similar.
