This paper examines the potential for online instruction, and in particular the MOOC format, in enabling students to increase their global awareness, perspective, and engagement. First we outline the conceptual and pedagogical frameworks that inform our research. Then we map holistic global learning outcomes to practices that support online teaching and learning. Next we trace the evolution of two diverse MOOC platforms, differentiating between cMOOCs – courses that focus on knowledge generation, creativity, autonomy, collaboration and networking – and xMOOCs – courses based on traditional instructional formats, fixed content, and centralized discussion forums (Welsh & Dragusin, 2013, p. 54). Finally, we present the thematic results of our literature review and make recommendations for online learning policy and practice.
