This study explored an online tutoring approach developed to improve the quality of online forums in teacher education courses. Based on self-determination theory, this session will discuss a study designed to: 1) investigate the effects of facilitating peer-tutoring activity on pre-service teachers’ basic psychological needs of self-determined extrinsic motivations (competence, autonomy, relatedness, and perceived learning outcome), and 2) explore whether peer tutoring in an online discussion foster higher mental operations than the traditional instructor-led discussion. The papers concludes with directions for future research.
