Understanding Presidential Transitions in Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of presidents at the nation’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). We documented 1) the rate of presidential turnover at these institutions within the last 25 years and 2) the reasons for presidential turnover within the same time frame. Our goal was to offer an in-depth analysis of the college president experience specifically within HBCUs, highlighting how such individuals negotiate the challenges of their presidential tenure.
