This study examined African American men’s experiences of masculinity in the South. The data presented explores several important themes of how society affects not only men’s general conception of masculinity and how they measure up against it but also their current situation and how society has affected their physical status as a man. As educators continue to work toward social justice in schools with youth, it is important we understand how education takes place in multiple contexts. We learn about masculinity (and femininity) in multiple ways and from multiple sources. This study is significant because it examines how African American men in the South perceive masculinity. This knowledge helps us understand how to create supportive educational lessons of masculinity.
