What Do Children Learn When They Do Math?

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Gold Level, Grand CD

Abstract

Using Eisner's article "What Do Children Learn When They Paint" as inspiration, this paper explores how mathematics is co-constructed with self and world. Drawing on a poststructural framework, the paper theorizes: Mathematics is part of children's knowing and being. Mathematical thinking is integral to children's perception and experienced reality. Children's mathematical theorizing continually (re)defines objects and language.
