Influencing Students' Perceptions of Campus Climates That Support Community Engagement

Abstract

Using data from the 2012-2014 administrations of the Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory (PSRI), we investigated undergraduate students’ perceptions of the Climate for Contributing to a Larger Community. Employing multilevel modeling techniques we examined student and institution level effects at 22 four-year institutions, investigating the role of high-impact practices and influence of campus professionals in civic and multicultural capacities. It was determined individual student level effects account for the majority of the variance in their perceptions of this climate. Students’ perceptions related the role of campus professionals and their perceptions of the overall campus climate for personal and social responsibility are found to be the strongest predictors of the Climate for Contributing to the Larger Community.
