Using William Doll’s post-modern curriculum theory of 4Rs (Richness, Recursion, Relation and Rigor) (1993) within the theoretical framework of chaos and complexity, this paper explores the rich dynamics of mathematical conversations in a math content and methods class in a state university. It aims to find out how to use a recursive approach to develop a high-quality discourse in mathematics classrooms. The quality of discourse is evaluated by the richness of students’ understanding and levels of connections made in the discourse.
