A Call for Collective Achievement: The Cross-Generational Schooling Experiences of African American Males

Abstract

Over the past decade since No Child Left Behind (2001), the academic achievement of Black males is still a major concern; with cities and states across the nation reporting dismal achievement data for Black males. Researchers, policymakers, administrators, and teachers are often charged with developing new policies and implementing reform initiatives to improve the academic achievement and outcomes for African American male students. Typically, these very students are not a part of this process. This study allows the voices of multiple generations of African American males to speak about their own educational experiences, and to suggest a theoretical and practical framework of collective achievement that captures and delineates the engagement and investment of the multiple stakeholders involved in their education.
