The university college is a unique organizational structure in postsecondary education that serves as the locus for supporting the success of entering beginning and transfer students. The purpose of our research was to consider the conditions through which university colleges emerge as organizational structures. By reviewing survey data from a national sample of university college leaders, we will consider the historical origins of university colleges against the backdrop of evolving higher education policy agendas increasingly focused on degree completion. This session should be of theoretical interest to scholars of organizational change and leadership, as well as of practical interest to campus leaders with responsibility for student support services.
