Unpacking the Effects of Class Size Reduction on Classroom Environments

Abstract

This exploratory research attempts to examine the influence of CSR on the classroom environment and classroom management with the intent of a developing a model for understanding how CSR might contribute to improved student outcomes. Case studies of 34 schools participating in a class size reduction reform occurred over a three-year period to address the research questions. Findings suggest that the implementation of CSR resulted in numerous changes in the classroom environment, leading to additional instructional time and greater student engagement. Moreover, some teachers capitalized on the additional instructional time afforded by CSR to manage their classrooms differently and change teaching behaviors. In these instances, teachers reported stronger teacher-student relationships and more differentiated instruction.
