Within response to intervention (RTI), students’ rate of growth is often compared against aim lines that connects their current level of achievement with a goal spaced over a specified amount of time. Students’ responsiveness to instruction is evaluated by comparing the number of data points above or below the line, with consecutive data points below the line (generally 3-5) prompting a change in instruction. The purpose of this study is to present the results of a national norming study for students’ within-year mathematics growth, Grades 6-8. This information can supplement seasonal cross-sectional norms to help teachers select reasonably ambitious goals for student achievement. Results suggest growth overall is modest, and aim lines should be constructed with this in mind.
