Innovating With Disruption: Faculty Responses to Integrated Reading and Writing Remediation in Texas

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal B

Abstract

In 2012, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board amended its Texas Success Initiative, the policy that dictates college readiness measures for all public institutions in the state (THECB, 2012). Among its amendments is the mandated integration of developmental writing and reading in all institutions by 2017 (THECB, 2012). The purpose of this presentation is to shed light on the experiences and perceptions of developmental faculty about teaching integrated developmental reading and writing at an urban community college in Texas. The perspectives of these faculty members are an important part of gauging whether or not a program is functional and successful, yet Townsend and Twombly (2007) argue that community college faculty are often ignored by higher education scholarship.
