Three-Dimensional Learning and Assessment in Middle School Science

Abstract

This paper describes a project currently developing assessments to support a broader understanding of science that includes practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts described in the Next Generation Science Standards. The first of the assessments to integrate all three dimensions are part of a suite of embedded, formative assessments and a summative, benchmark assessment intended for use in a middle school physical science unit on energy. The current phase of the project has investigated the technical quality, feasibility, and utility of the assessments, and is using these preliminary results in an iterative development process.
