In preparation for a larger research study, which focuses in part on culturally relevant approaches to mentoring as essential to leadership development, this roundtable paper addresses learnings from a literature review conducted on behalf of striving to formulate a new and comprehensive definition of culturally responsive mentoring. Based on a review of literature, this roundtable paper explores broad definitions of mentoring and the use and applicability of mentoring as part of adult and leadership development. We explore the nature of cross-cultural, and Africentric models of mentoring within the field of education and seek to build a definition of culturally relevant mentoring as applicable to leadership development of Black male school principals.
