A Self-Guided Gallery Walk of the Poster Session as a Difficult Exhibition

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

We seek to offer a break from the traditional exchange of research knowledge in the formal space of a poster session by offering the poster session as a curated exhibition site. Our particular poster within this AERA-poster-session-as-exhibition will function as a staging area, with a didactic explaining the project, along with pamphlets that offer a self-guided tour through the exhibition space. According to Godlewska (2013), structured spaces of learning, like the academic poster session, privilege one type of narrowly defined written intellect, marginalizing a great many “kinds of creativity, brilliance, and achievement” (p. 386). Instead, we argue that exhibitions can be set up to foster critical engagement.
