Abstract

This study examines the contemporary special education and formation of the learning disabled child through the lasting influence of Samuel Kirk. Kirk is credited with coining the term “learning disabilities” and considered a forefather of the modern special education movement. The aim of this research and proposed presentation is better understand the philosophical underpinnings of the theory of learning disabilities and the residual impact on education through the influence and impact of Kirk. My work is specifically interested in reconsidering the educability narrative commonly associated with Kirk.
