This paper provides a cross-case analysis of the changing role of university principal preparation program coordinators in three states: Alabama, Illinois, and North Carolina. Each of these states’ departments of education mandated university principal preparation program redesign during the last decade. Using Habermas’ framework, each case study presents analysis of program coordinator interview response data in terms of technical (e.g., instrumental), practical (e.g., meaning-making), and emancipatory (e.g., social justice) orientation. This cross-case analysis identifies common themes from the studies, important distinctions, and implications for other university principal preparation programs.
