Football Frenzy and March Madness: Does Athletic Success Increase Campus Crime?

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton, Floor: Second Level, Colorado

Abstract

Intercollegiate athletics have become an important part of the holistic college experience. Scholars such as Toma (2003), Clotfelter (2011) and others have documented the benefits and drawbacks of integrating an athletic subculture into a campus' identity. Using a fixed-effect semi-log ordinary least squared panel data regression model, this study quantifies the impact of intercollegiate athletic success on campus crime and deviate behavior. Results from this study will help to inform the discourse around the escalation of college sports on college campuses.
