This study examines the experiences of participants in Do the Write Thing (DtWT) Challenge, a national violence prevention program for middle level students. Surveys and focus group interviews were conducted with students, parents, and teachers who attended the program’s National Recognition Week in Washington, DC. Results indicated that participants’ experiences were positive overall. They believed the program had a significant impact on them and improved relationships among students and family members. Teachers indicated that participation helped them better understand students and the pressures they face outside of school academics. Results suggest that teachers should be supported in developing the necessary skills to respond to students’ mental health needs as well as teaching strategies for supporting students’ coping strategies.
