Many children are put at risk of school failure by two problems: the struggle to become successful, engaged readers and the inability to develop complex understandings of themselves and others. The concurrence of these problems results in a range of socio-emotional and academic problems that very often produces adverse effects that persist into adulthood. Children need curriculum that fosters both reading engagement and the development of socio-emotional understandings. In this session, we describe one curricular response to this need called Teaching Reading for Social Understanding, and report results from a study of its implementation.
