Linguistic Factors Influencing Hungarian Students' Phonemic Identification From Grades 1 to 4

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

As a component of phonemic awareness, speech-sound discrimination is an important factor in learning to read. Many students struggle with overcoming difficulties in reading and research show that in most cases the inefficient speech-sound discrimination and phoneme identification skills are the causes of reading deficits. Nevertheless, there is insufficient research on the linguistic factors influencing Hungarian students' phonemic identification from grade 1 to 4. Our findings show that in the first four grades the place and manner of articulation are the most important factors that determine the developmental level of this skill. This result can be useful for further development of speech-sound identification in early childhood.
