Discussing the Epistemological Possibilities and Limits in Puerto Rican Education Research

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Montreux 1&2

Abstract

I am interested in the legal and historical aspects biopolitics, and their respective influences on contemporary education and education reforms in Puerto Rico. I am currently researching how biopolitical discourses are used to rationalize and construct ‘the citizen’ and ‘the child’ within education reforms in Puerto Rico. I am also researching how that rationale determines which ‘child’ and which ‘citizen’ is to be educated. As discussed elsewhere, I am interested in the intersection of language education reforms, economic development, and biopolitics in Puerto Rican education reforms. My aim at this conference is to try to engage the audience in a discussion about the possibilities and limits of using biopolitics to examine educational research practices in the pursuit of advancing justice.
