Abstract

The Wasatch Youth of Color Collective (WYC) is a university-community partnership located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Recruited primarily from local public high schools, WYC youth researchers collaborate with university students and/or university staff to engage in critical thinking through the arts/media and community-based research skills. The focus of this study is two-fold—theoretical development and privileging community-based research practices with/by youth of color. I aim to understand the dialectical relationships among such topics as popular media, identities, civic engagement, and informal spaces of learning. This study draws from two complimentary frameworks, Borderlands and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) in education, in order to address collegial pedagogy, digital civics, and participatory politic through youth perspectives.
