The Intermarriage of Educated Mexican Women and Dutch Partners and How Love and the Interplay of Language, Culture, and Heritage Break Down Developing Country Stereotypes

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Using a 2012 quantitative and qualitative study of Mexicans in the Netherlands addressing their general quality of life and targeted in-depth interviews of Mexican women currently being completed, backed by Masters’ and Bachelors’ research theses on Mexican culture, language and heritage in the Netherlands, this study presents how Mexican women through their educational levels, intermarriage with Dutch partners, and love migration are helping to break down the stereotypes often attributed to Mexico as a poor underdeveloped and backward country. These women live transnational lives and are crafting a place within Dutch society by continuing their studies, learning Dutch, integrating into Dutch culture and societal norms while they retain or reframe Mexican cultural traditions.
