Helping Interactions and Learning in an Art Crating Company

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This paper presents an ethnographic case study of an art crating company. The analysis follows the development, exchange, and transformation of spatial representations over the course of a crating job, where an object (or collection of objects) is inspected, then a crate is designed and constructed for the packing and transport of the object. Employees with a diversity of roles and a range of expertise interact and collaborate to produce spatial representations to accomplish the secure transport of each object.
