Abstract

This paper examines the attempts to organize college faculty in Illinois in the 1960s. It provides both the histories of the specific institutional organizing efforts and experiences and identifies four larger themes: 1) Differentiation between K-12 and higher education, 2) Internal struggles in national organizations, 3) Tensions and conflict between national organizations, and 4) the difficulties in promoting faculty rights in multi-campus settings.
