Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This study determined relational patterns of student interactions from a network perspective in online peer mentoring sites within an undergraduate teacher education program. The peer mentoring sites were developed to provide both newcomers and more experienced peers the opportunity to discuss, share, and learn both from and with one another. This study used social network analysis to analyze the interpersonal interaction patterns that developed among the students in the peer mentoring sites. Computer-mediated communication provided the opportunity for the students to connect with their fellow program participants despite differences in geographic location and level in the peer mentoring sites. These settings allowed the students to collaborate with their peers and engage in problem-solving activity and inquiry.
