The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the high school experiences of current collegiate Black male student-athletes. The researchers utilized a phenomenological approach to understand how the student-athletes balanced academics and athletics during high school. Three student-athletes from a Division I University on the East Coast participated in the study, each of whom excelled academically and athletically while in high school. The student-athletes cited the importance of self-awareness of their athletic ability and career possibilities, and family accountability, in their successfully navigating their academic and athletic endeavors while in high school. Implications for all educators, particularly school counselors, are provided. Future research and policy suggestions are also discussed.
