Does Teachers' Classroom Management Quality Change Over Time, and Does It Affect Students' Academic Engagement?

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Swissotel, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne III

Abstract

The way teachers behave towards and interact with their students influences the quality of their support/relationships with their students and the quality of their student behaviour management. Nowadays, this is broadly conceptualised as ‘classroom management’ (CM) aimed at, among others, student behaviour regulation, the encouragement of academic engagement and the promotion of self-regulation. Research has established that teacher-student relationships and CM are of great importance to students. In this study, (changes in) teachers’ classroom management quality during the first grade of secondary education are investigated in relation to students’ academic engagement and its precursors (self-efficacy, intrinsic value). Multilevel growth curve modeling is applied. Results indicated differences in (evolutions of) classroom management quality between classes/teachers and positive links with student outcomes.
