This paper reports on qualitative data collected from a longitudinal study testing the impact of a new secondary science instructional framework that integrates language and literacy teaching surrounding scientific and engineering practices inclusive of English language learners. This study involves secondary science teacher education candidates across three states. The baseline analysis represents prevailing views of language and literacy teaching by current secondary science teacher candidates. The paper describes secondary school science teacher candidates’ attitudes and knowledge about language and literacy development and preparation for teaching science to secondary school English language learners.
