Preservice teachers’ past experiences in school have long been suspected to influence their ideas and expectations of teaching and students, however little research has addressed this in depth. This study sought to explore both what their past school experiences were and how those experiences might impact what they do in the future. This mixed methods study examined the past school experiences of future teachers using survey and interview data as well as their responses to two classroom scenarios in order to understand beliefs about students. Findings from this study provide a more detailed picture of preservice teachers’ past school experiences and further support the idea that past experiences may influence their future teaching and ideas about future students.
