The Invisible Student: The Identities, Experiences, and Perceptions of Gay Males in Formal Schooling in Jamaica

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Formal schooling as provided by our country should be considered one of the safest places for all students. The reality in Jamaica however, is that we are not providing for all students. There is a section of our school population that is being excluded each and every day – homosexual students. Data on the impact of homophobia on the lives of GBLT students are not readily available within the Jamaican context. This is why a study of this nature, is not only important and necessary, but overdue. The mixed method study, using a sample of self-identified Jamaican gay males will examine the identities, experiences and perceptions of self-identified Jamaican gay men through their reflection on their formal schooling experience.
