Academic Integrity in Higher Education: A Cross-Country Comparison

Abstract

This research compared Taiwanese and Chinese students’ academic dishonesty behaviors. 605 students participated in this study. Instruments included integrity culture scale and academic dishonesty scenarios. Comparative analysis showed (1) the climate of academic integrity and system to regulate academic integrity perceived by students in China was higher than in Taiwan. (2) in comparison with Taiwanese students, Chinese students had a higher frequency of engaging in paper plagiarism, copying others’ work, delinquency, misuse credit and fraudulence (including selling and purchasing, and falsification. (3) Taiwanese students perceived their peers have a higher frequency of engaging in online plagiarism and unauthorized help, while Chinese students perceived their peers have a higher frequency of engaging in misuse credit, fraudulence, and falsification.
